5th Grade Math
I am excited again this year to be using the Math MENU approach in class. Math MENU begins with a whole-class mini lesson on the key concept for the day, and then the students break up into different stations to work on their skills. The stations work in the following way:
PRACTICE PAGES: At this station, the students will work on pages from the Math Journal that focus in on the key concept for the day. This is where they will apply what they just learned in the mini-lesson. Students will collaborate in partnerships or small groups during this center.
GAMES: At this station, students will play games from each of the Math MENU areas to sharpen their skills. These areas include Measurement and Data, Exploring Geometry and Algebra, and Numbers and Operations. New games will be introduced in each unit. Students will play the games with partners or small groups in this center, and may use their iPad to do individual online games as well.
MAP: The "My Activity Page" center begins with a page from the 180 Days of Math series, which has a problems from each of the key 5th grade areas for the students to solve. This page will be checked together at the end of class, and the students will record and monitor their progress on each of the skills. Following the page, the students will then work on reviewing skills they have struggled on in the past or challenge themselves with new skills that will be taught in the future. Students will utilize the Math MENU weebly and the IXL website in this station to help them with that. Students work individually in this center using privacy folders for focus.
