what is "pop into a good book?"
Each month, students will be assigned a fiction novel to read at their INDEPENDENT reading level to complete. The students will read the book during their Daily 5 "Read to Self" time, but should also read at home 20+ minutes each night. When the book is finished, the students will have a series of questions and/or activities to complete on the book. They will do this work on the template provided by Mrs. Newell. The template will be stapled to a brown paper bag. If the assignment is completed AT A QUALITY LEVEL and turned in ON TIME ON THE DUE DATE, the kids will get their bag filled with popcorn. The students will then enjoy the popcorn as they chat about the novel with others who read the same book, or a similar book according to theme, genre, etc. Even if a student does not complete their assignment, they will still be involved in a discussion group about their book. A copy of the template will be provided on this page each month, but if the students lose the paper bag given to them, they will be responsible for supplying their own for that month.
guidelines for choosing your pop! into a good book:
For Comprehend:
Pick a random page from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Does it makes sense to you?
For Know:
Pick a random page from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Use the FIVE FINGER RULE: If you reach the end of the page, and there are five or more words you don't understand, the book is too hard! All three random pages must pass the test in order for you to choose the book
